How do I avoid overselling trading cards on eBay and Shopify?
Direct answer
Overselling happens when the same single card is for sale on eBay and in your Shopify store and both channels still count it as in stock. The fix is one stock for both channels: one channel is the stock master and the other follows. With the NeoSatoshi stock sync (Business plan or higher), Shopify is the master: a Shopify sale lowers the eBay quantity, and an eBay sale reaches Shopify as an order or a stock change, so the card does not sell a second time.
Why single cards oversell so easily
Most singles are quantity 1. A sealed product with forty units can absorb a late update; a single card cannot. If a card sells on eBay in the evening and you update Shopify the next morning, anyone can buy it in your shop in between, and one of the two buyers gets a cancellation. On eBay, cancelling because the item is out of stock can also hurt your seller standing.
Manual ways that work at small volume
- Split the stock. Each copy is either on eBay or in Shopify, never on both.
- Keep a buffer. For cards you hold several copies of, list fewer on eBay than you own, so one late update does not oversell.
- Update right after every sale. Take the card down or lower the quantity on the other channel the same day.
All three break down once you have hundreds of singles on both channels, because every sale needs a manual step and one forgotten step is a cancelled order.
Let one stock drive both channels
The reliable fix is a sync with one stock master. In NeoSatoshi that is Shopify:
- A Shopify sale lowers the quantity on eBay.
- An eBay sale reaches Shopify as a Shopify order tagged with the eBay order number, or as a stock change. You choose which.
- A card sold out in Shopify is hidden at quantity 0 on eBay or its listing ends, depending on the out-of-stock setting you choose for your eBay account.
- Shopify cards that are not on eBay yet can get an eBay listing with the title, item specifics and stock image Direct Listing gives the same card, for Pokémon, One Piece, Disney Lorcana, Yu-Gi-Oh!, Magic: The Gathering, Star Wars: Unlimited and Digimon Card Game. Football (soccer) cards and graded cards are not created automatically.
What to check before you switch it on
- Existing eBay listings. They are read once so no card goes to eBay twice. Listings made outside the eBay inventory system, for example with File Exchange or on the eBay website, are invisible to the sync until you take them over. The takeover is one way.
- One Shopify location. eBay shows the stock of one Shopify location, and eBay sales are booked there.
- One card, one SKU. Parallels and variants are never merged. When two products share one card, the sync does not guess between them and leaves that card alone until you give one of them its own SKU.
- Free listing allowance. New listings stay within the free eBay listing allowance you confirm; insertion fees beyond it are charged by eBay.
- A pilot first. A free report shows which cards would go to eBay and at what price, then a few real pilot listings that you check on eBay, then a preview and the release.
If you also sell on Cardmarket
Cardmarket is not part of the NeoSatoshi stock sync. If TCGPowerTools fills your Shopify store, TCGPowerTools keeps Cardmarket and Shopify in step itself, and the stock sync books eBay sales as Shopify orders so TCGPowerTools sees them.
