Should I use eBay variation listings for Pokémon singles?

Direct answer

A variation listing (eBay calls it a multi-variation listing) is one fixed-price listing in which the buyer picks the exact card from a dropdown, and every card has its own price, quantity and photo. For Pokémon singles it works best for cheaper cards from the same set: far fewer listings to manage, and set collectors can pick several cards from one page. Valuable cards, graded slabs and cards buyers search for by name are better as single listings. NeoSatoshi creates variation listings automatically on the Business plan: one listing per set, kept apart by finish, language, condition and edition, and new cards of that set join the existing listing.

What a variation listing is

On eBay, a multi-variation listing is a single fixed-price (Buy It Now) listing that holds several versions of an item, each with its own SKU, price and quantity. Card sellers use it for "cards to choose" listings: the title names the set, and a dropdown lists the cards with their own pictures. Auctions cannot have variations.

Everything that is the same for all cards (game, set, language, condition) sits on the listing. Only the card itself changes in the dropdown. On eBay the condition of a trading card single is set per listing, not per variation, so cards in different conditions can never share one listing.

Pros and cons for card sellers

Pros

  • Far fewer listings to manage when you sell many cheaper cards from one set.
  • Set collectors find many of the cards they miss on one page and can add several to their cart, which helps combined orders.
  • Every card keeps its own photo, price and quantity.

Cons

  • The title names the set, not each card. A buyer searching for one specific card finds a single listing with the card name in the title more predictably.
  • Fixed price only, no auctions.
  • One condition, language and finish per listing, so a mixed pile becomes several listings.
  • eBay allows at most 250 variations per listing.
  • When you end the listing, every card in it goes offline at once.

Variation or single listing: a rule of thumb

  • Variation listing: commons, uncommons, cheaper rares and reverse holos from the same set, especially for buyers completing a set.
  • Single listing: high-value cards, chase cards and cards buyers search for by name, graded slabs, and anything you want to auction.
  • Many sellers do both: one variation listing per set for the cheaper cards, single listings for the expensive ones.

How NeoSatoshi creates variation listings

  1. Detect and review your cards in Listing Cards and set the condition of every card (condition is never detected; every card starts as Near Mint).
  2. In step 4, click the eBay tile "Direct listing".
  3. In the setup, open "Listing structure" and choose "One listing per set, cards to choose" instead of the default "One listing per card". The summary shows how many grouped listings will be created.
  4. Check prices, images and text, then publish. The run goes to all your active eBay marketplaces at once.

How the cards are grouped

  • One listing per set, and separately per finish, language, condition and edition. Normal and reverse holo stay apart, First Edition cards get their own listing, Lorcana foil copies get their own listing with "Foil" in the title, and special versions such as Poke Ball patterns get their own.
  • One dropdown entry per card, shown as number and name (for example "003/185" followed by the card name), with its own photo, price and quantity. Several copies of the same card become one entry with the total quantity; if their prices differ, the lower one is used and you are told.
  • Title: generated automatically, "Cards to choose:" plus the set name on English eBay sites, "Karten zur Auswahl:" on eBay.de, eBay.at and eBay.ch, followed by finish, edition, condition and language as far as eBay's 80 characters allow. The description uses your eBay template.
  • At least two cards per group. A lone card becomes a normal single listing, unless a grouped listing for that set is already live: then it joins that listing.
  • Joining an existing listing: new cards of the same group are added to the live listing. NeoSatoshi reads the live listing first, so the cards already in it are never removed.
  • 250 cards at most. Cards above eBay's limit are listed as single listings, with the reason shown.
  • Listed on their own: graded cards and cards for which you chose a specific Cardmarket version.
  • Per card SKU: each card keeps its own SKU (with your storage location at the front if you assigned one), and the daily price sync updates each card individually.

What NeoSatoshi does and does not do

  • Variation listings are created through eBay Direct Listing, which needs the Business plan or higher. The eBay CSV export creates one listing per card.
  • It sends title, description, item specifics, your policies and location, photos, price and quantity. You need eBay business policies (shipping, payment, returns) set up first.
  • It does not detect condition and does not mix conditions in one listing.
  • It does not sync stock between Shopify and eBay yet.
  • It does not create auctions with variations, because eBay does not allow them.

Frequently asked questions

Can I auction cards in a variation listing?

No. eBay only allows variations in fixed-price listings. Auction valuable cards as single listings.

Can one variation listing hold cards in different conditions?

No. eBay sets the condition per listing for trading card singles. NeoSatoshi puts cards in different conditions into different listings automatically.

How many cards fit in one eBay variation listing?

At most 250. NeoSatoshi fills a listing up to that limit and lists any further cards of the group as single listings.

What happens when I list more cards of the same set later?

They are added to the existing grouped listing of that set, finish, language, condition and edition. A card that is already in it gets its quantity increased.

Are reverse holos in the same listing as the normal cards?

No. Reverse holos get their own listing with "Reverse Holo" in the title, so buyers see the finish before they open the dropdown.
